UPDATE: The Official 2017 Peer HMDA data is now available
The Official 2017 Peer HMDA data is now available for Comply DataMine and the Peer-2-Peer website. The data is available on the RATA Support Site. If you downloaded and installed the pre-release version of the data, this will simply overwrite the old data.
The DataMine tool allows institutions to create Excel pivot tables and custom reports with the peer data and also compare it to your current HMDA data. Once you have installed this data you will have to do a full Sync in Datamine to use it.
The Peer-2-Peer product is a web-based tool designed to help you understand how your institution is lending compared to specific peers or the rest of the industry. The Peer tool can help you see Summary Lending data for any submitting institution as well as Ranking reports and Market Share reports.
As always feel free to call if you have any comments or questions.
Pre-Release Article from April 10th:
Pre-release of 2017 HMDA Peer Data (Unofficial release for Datamine only)
As you may or may not be aware, the CFPB has released a preliminary version of the 2017 Peer HMDA data on their website: https://ffiec.cfpb.gov/data-publication/modified-lar.
This is much earlier than in years past, but the data is in a different format and currently missing the transmittal information. What does this mean to RATA customers? Well the short answer is, we have downloaded the data and a 2017 peer data file is available on the RATA support site. This file can be downloaded then loaded into Comply as system data for use with Datamine. This is an unofficial pre-release version of the data. Customers need to be aware that there are certain problems with the data and that you are using at your own risk.
We sent an email about the data to the CFPB and asked if they would be sending out a full peer file and Respondent Panel file. They said they were expecting to put that together for release sometime in May. When that data is released we will re-evaluate it at that time and then re-re-release if it is better and more complete. Some of you would like to see the peer data now, and for those that have Datamine, you can take an early look. We will not be posting this pre-release of the data on the HMDAPeer website; we will post it there when and if it's official.
So what are the issues with the pre-release data?
There were a few hurdles and complete road blocks with the new CFP Data. For one, if you go to the CFPB link above you will see that you can only access the institution data on an individual basis. We did figure out a way to download all of the institutions' data and then combine it manually but that was a process. Also keep in mind the data is not in pipe-delimited format which is much different than in years past, so all of our older conversion programs had to be rewritten and processes manually run.
When consolidating the data, we noticed there were duplicate reporting entities and some of the institutions had incorrect Respondent IDs or Tax IDs. We resolved that problem and as it turns out only 4 institutions had this issue.
The last and biggest issue is that there is no Respondent Panel or Transmittal info with this data, so we have no addresses, assets sizes, etc. that people normally search on to create peer groups. To get around this we took last year's panel and tried to mesh it with this year's data. We were able to match all but approx. 300 or so institutions that may be new or have different respondent numbers this year. Again with the "official" release in May they are supposed to include this data.
After all of that we ended up with a file that can be loaded and seems to have all of the LAR data, but again, some of the transmittal info for some banks will be missing. If you are creating peer groups based on assets or location you may miss a couple. If you are trying to get some aggregate number for the US or for specific areas that should work pretty well with DataMine.
To try and convert the data for use with the peer website would take more time than it's worth, especially since they will be releasing the official data in about a month and we would have to redo it.
As always, please feel free to call us if you have any questions or comments about this data or if you need information on the Comply Datamine.
